EN 10025-3 Grade S420NL introduction

The alloyed, normalised/normalising rolled high grade steel S420NL is a weldable fine-grained steel with a min. yield point of 420 N/mm². The steel is applicated in normalized condition for several types of welded constructions such as fixed and movable storage container, high-pressure pipes, bridge and load-bearing constructions etc. 


Cold forming: Suitability for cold bending, folding, cold flanging or cold welting has to be agreed. For sheet, strip and wide flat steel in normalized condition, for nominal thickness (s) up to 16 mm can be warranted the following bending radius values:


longitudinal: 5 x s
transverse: 4 x s

Normalized S420NL has the following typical properties:



  • Yield strength: 420 MPa (60,900 psi)

  • Tensile strength: 520-690 MPa (75,400-100,000 psi)

  • Elongation: 15-23%

  • Reduction of area: 35-50%

  • Charpy impact energy: 35 J (25 ft-lbf) at -20°C (-4°F)

  • Hardness: 180-220 Brinell


Normalized formed S420NL is a type of S420NL that has been further processed through cold forming operations, such as bending, drawing, or stamping. This process can improve the material's strength and hardness, but it may also reduce its ductility.


The specific properties of normalized formed S420NL will vary depending on the forming process used and the degree of deformation. However, it can generally be expected to have higher strength and hardness than normalized S420NL.
