EN 10085 Grade 34CrAlNi7 surface hardened introduction

The nitriding steel 34CrAlNi7 can undergo quenchhardening and is used for heavy machine parts, piston rods, plunger pistons, spindles with particularly large dimensions.
The steel contains a nitride agent (Cr and Al) which contributes through the nitriding process or the nitro-carburization process with N or N and C to a higher:
- case hardness
- abrasion resistance
- fatigue strength
and
- corrosion resistance.
It is used for forged construction components: quench-hardened, mechanically processed and treated thermo-chemically (for example nitriding).
The steel with an increased Al-content is susceptible to increased case decarbonization. The forging requires sufficient additives for processing so that the finished construction component can undergo the nitriding process without decarburization.
